I hate not finishing a book. I get this flashback of grade school kids screeching and pointing "Quitter! Loser!" The disappointment of a teacher when you confess you didn't finish your reading.
At what point should a person give themselves permission to stop reading a book? (And not feel guilty about it.)
Nancy Pearl a famous Librarian, Best selling Author, and literary critic had her own theory. The Rule of 50 which states "If you still don't like a book after slogging through the first 50 pages, set it aside. If you're more than 50 years old, subtract your age from 100 and only grant it that many pages.
What keeps me reading an uninspiring book???
- I paid money for this book.
- My friends all liked it.
- It made the New York Times Bestseller list.
- I've already invested so much time.
- It's from one of my favorite authors.
- It got such great reviews.
- My conscience says don't be a quitter!
- It's a moral imperative.
